The Game is Rigged

In life, it’s easy to conclude that you’re getting the short end of the stick.

On social media, everyone seems to be having a better life than you are.

At the grocery store, each year you pay a bit more for the same item.

In the parking lot, the other guy inevitably gets the spot you were waiting for.

At the casino, the house always wins.

Even your bathroom scale seems to be part of the conspiracy against you: surely it’s rounding up?

But with God, this isn’t true. The game is rigged in your favour!

How so?

When we think of the scales of justice and mercy, we assume they’re evenly balanced. But God actually has his finger on the scale, so to speak. For those who believe in His Son, it’s tilted heavily toward mercy.

“The Lord isn't slow about keeping his promises, as some people think he is. In fact, God is patient, because he wants everyone to turn from sin and no one to be lost.” (2 Peter 3:9)

God longs to be merciful (Isaiah 30:18). But at the same time He must judge sin.

How does He reconcile these two seemingly contradictory impulses?

Your Heavenly Pinch Hitter

Do you ever feel a bit shaky when you’re “up at bat” in life?

Sometimes we face daunting challenges, and don’t feel we’re capable of facing them on our own. We feel like we need a bit of help, someone who can take over for us when we’re at our weakest.

Someone like a pinch hitter.

In baseball, a pinch hitter acts as substitute who bats for a teammate. The pinch hitter might step in because the original player is injured, or when the one next up at bat is a less effective hitter, such as when a pitcher is worn out after six or seven innings pitching.

The manager might decide that the substitute has a better chance of helping their team to score, or may send in the pinch hitter to execute a specific play. In many cases, the pinch hitter will be called upon at a critical moment in the game.

Sounds like a handy person to have around, doesn’t it?

Did you know that believers have a heavenly “pinch hitter”?

This teammate who goes come to your aid is the Holy Spirit Himself.

Accept No Substitutes

I have a special treat for visitors to The Faith Cafe today: a guest post by my dear friend Veronica Gerber. I’m sure you’ll be as impressed as I am with her Biblical insights and compassionate heart. Enjoy!

Yes, I’ll admit it. I’ve become a bit of a coffee snob since I first tasted the black gold that is the hallmark of the 90s: specialty coffee. It’s easy now to simply say “no thanks” to casual offers of coffee at a meeting or the local diner. Once you’ve tasted the real thing, the competition doesn’t even come close: it may look like coffee, perhaps even smell like coffee, but doesn’t quite pack the same punch…there’s simply no comparison.

Can I say the same about my spiritual palate? Psalm 34:8 declares, “O taste and see that the Lord is good.” Once we’ve tasted, as-it-were, the goodness of the Lord, dined at the King’s table, how can we feed again on the swill that darkly courses through the world’s troughs?

Take a reading of your own heart and mind. Are you consciously aware of what you’re drinking in day by day through the eye-gate and ear-gate? If you’re settling for the trough when you could be drinking deeply of the living water Jesus offers, stop.
