During the past week hundreds of millions of people around the globe have been told to “shelter in place,” a phrase normally reserved for natural disasters or violent attacks. In today’s context, it means to stay at home for a certain length of time to help prevent the further spread of COVID-19.

Good advice. But what if it’s your heart that needs shelter? Where can you go when you need protection from emotional distress?

The Bible speaks of a shelter that believers can turn to when events threaten to overwhelm us:

The arms of our loving God.

Scripture speaks of God as our shelter, our refuge, our rock, our shield and our fortress. Like a little child running into its parent’s arms for comfort and protection, we can turn to God when faced with bewildering circumstances.

Let me share with you some powerful Scriptures that I hope will encourage you to trust in God as your protector:

“The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are protected.” (Proverbs 18:10 CSB)

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’ ” (Psalm 91: 1-2 NIV)

“The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” (Psalm 18:2 NIV)

“For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock.” (Psalm 27:5 NIV)

“But you are a tower of refuge to the poor, O Lord, a tower of refuge to the needy in distress. You are a refuge from the storm and a shelter from the heat.” (Isaiah 25:4 NLT)

“He is always kind and loving to me; he is my fortress, my tower of strength and safety, my deliverer. He stands before me as a shield.” (Psalm 144:2 TLB)

God is also pictured in the Scriptures as tenderly sheltering us under His wings, in the same way that a mighty eagle would spread its strong wings over its young in the nest to protect them:

“He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armour and protection.” (Psalm 91:4 NLT)

“I will hide beneath the shadow of your wings until the danger passes by.” (Psalm 57:1b NLT)

“How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.” (Psalm 36:7 NIV)

Aren’t those beautiful metaphors? God not only protects His children through His might and power, like a strong tower or fortress, He also tenderly shields us under His wings, like a hen does her chicks.

Are you frightened right now by events beyond your control? Do you crave a feeling of reassurance and comfort?

Call out to God, who loved you so deeply that He gave His Son Jesus to die for your sins. Run into His loving arms and let Him be your strong tower.

“Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honour Me.” (Psalm 50:15 NIV)

There’s no better place to take shelter than in the arms of God!
