Don’t you wish there was a style of clothing you could wear that would always be in fashion?
Think of it: You’d never have to worry about being caught wearing last year’s fashions. You’d never accidentally make a fashion faux-pas. Your clothes would always be in style.
Perhaps this is a notion that preoccupies women more than men. Men seem to be a bit luckier in the fashion department: styles of suits don’t evolve very rapidly over time, and they always look becoming.
Women, on the other hand, have had to put up with fashions that have changed drastically over the years and decades. Our foremothers had to endure corsets, hoop skirts, and bustles. Perhaps some of you are old enough to recall leg warmers, tie dye and jumpsuits.
Some styles inexplicably come back into fashion for a time, like bell-bottom jeans or platform shoes.
Let’s hope that some never do: women once wore skirts so wide that they had to turn sideways to get through a door!
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to put on a style that would never go out of fashion?
As a matter of fact, there is such an item of “clothing.”
Scripture advises us to put on Christ.
“Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Romans 13:14)
When we put on Christ, we dress in His attributes. We adopt His manner of attire and wear matching clothes, so to speak.
Our forgiveness of others duplicates what He models, our compassion mimics His pattern, and our love for the Father is a spitting image of His own.
Actors say that putting on the costume associated with their role helps them get into character. Putting on a superhero outfit makes kids feel they can take on anything.
In the same way, putting on Christ helps us mold our character into the likeness of His own.
But how do we do this in the first place?
By accepting Jesus as your Saviour and allowing God to renew your nature.
“And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes.” (Galatians 3:27)
“Put on your new nature, and be renewed as you learn to know your Creator and become like him.” (Colossians 3:10)
If you follow this fashion advice, you’ll never go wrong. It’s good for any season, any weather, and any climate. You’ll be in style for any occasion, whether it’s formal or casual, at work or at play.
As they say, clothes make the man (or woman).
What better clothing to put on than that of the righteousness of Christ!
“I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and a turban.”
Job 29:14
