“We’ve got you surrounded!”
This is always a thrilling moment in an action movie: when the authorities announce to the bad guy that he has no way of escape.
Officers are blocking every exit. Will he surrender, or try to fight his way out? (You’ll have to watch the movie to find out!)
Did you know that God has you surrounded, too?
But in a good way!
Our loving Heavenly Father assures us that He has us covered. He is always with us and surrounds us with His love and care.
As we enter a new year, let’s keep in our minds the ways God has promised to be with us. That way, we can take on the challenges ahead of us knowing that God’s got our back, so to speak.
Speaking of backs, Scripture tells us that God is behind us:
“Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left.” (Isaiah 30:21)
God also goes ahead of us:
“The LORD your God himself will cross over ahead of you. He will destroy these nations before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross over ahead of you, as the LORD said.” (Deuteronomy 31:3)
Psalm 139:5 sums this up well:
“You have enclosed me behind and before, and You have placed Your hand upon me.”
God is on our right:
“Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.” (Psalm 73:23)
And also on our left:
“You have given me your shield of victory. Your right hand supports me; your help has made me great.” (Psalm 18:35)
No matter how far up, down, east or west we go, God is there:
“Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle by the farthest sea, even there Your hand will guide me; Your right hand will hold me fast.” (Psalm 139:7-10)
God assures us that He is close by:
“…that they would seek God, if perhaps they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.” (Acts 17:27)
In fact, He’s got us surrounded!
“Many are the woes of the wicked, but the LORD’s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in him.” (Psalm 32:10)
“Surely, LORD, you bless the righteous; you surround them with your favour as with a shield.” (Psalm 5:12)
“As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people both now and forevermore.” (Psalm 125:2)
No matter what we go through, we can count on God to be right there:
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.” (Isaiah 43:2)
He promises to always be with us:
“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6)
“For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst.” (Matthew 18:20)
How do we know that God will keep these promises to be with us? Because that’s His middle name, so to speak!
“Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’ ” (Matthew 1:23)
So as you venture into a new year with all its challenges and surprises, remember this:
God’s got you surrounded!
