Isn’t it nice to eat something that’s freshly made?

There’s nothing quite like bread that was baked just hours ago, slathered with butter. French people know this: they go to the market each day to buy freshly baked baguettes or croissants.

Others like freshly squeezed orange juice in the mornings, or freshly brewed coffee.

A favourite treat of mine (at any time of the day) is freshly made brownies, still warm from the oven.

No one really likes leftovers (although leftover brownies are still pretty good!). But we love it when someone give us something that they baked fresh just for us.

God knows this, too.

That’s why He offers us fresh mercies every day, newly baked.

“The faithful love of the LORD never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.” (Lamentations 3:22-23)

You get a compassionate new start every day!

God doesn’t look at what you did wrong yesterday and make a deduction from the mercy He’s allotted to you today. He doesn’t give you leftovers or day-old bread.

Rather, the mistakes of yesterday aren’t held against you. You can ask God’s forgiveness for your sins and He will wipe the slate clean. You can start anew.

When we make a mess of things, God doesn’t cast us aside. Instead, He lovingly forgives us and gets us back on course. He says, “You’re my beloved child. I still love you. Let’s try this again. I’ll give you wisdom as to how to approach this problem a better way.”

With our loving Heavenly Father, there is always an abundant supply. His mercies and compassion are overflowing and limitless.

Even if we make mistakes daily (and we will), God has new mercies available to us daily, too. And God’s bakery never runs short: His supply always exceeds our need.

Most bakeries will start baking very early in the morning, well before 7 am. To get the freshest bread, you have to go soon after they open. If you saunter in late in the day, you may find that they’ve sold out. You’d have to come back tomorrow if you want fresh bread.

Not so with God. Even if you come to Him at the eleventh hour, He has an abundant supply of mercy for you. His arms are open 24/7 to welcome you. He never runs out of love or forgiveness.

God bakes up fresh mercies for you each new day.

And no one can out-bake God!

“The LORD, the LORD God, is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and faithfulness.”
